Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found many other marked automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials report initial examinations show the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
A senior representative commented the incident rendered him without words and needed to be solved quickly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
