The former Brazilian president arrested after being considered a risk of fleeing

Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
